Here's the thing about canopy work: every week you let it slide in June is two weeks of problems in August. A dense, tangled canopy going into veraison in Oregon's wet climate is a botrytis situation waiting to happen. And by the time you're pulling infected clusters in September, the damage is done.

We've been doing canopy management for Willamette Valley vineyards since 2013. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay — we know the differences in how these varietals need to be managed, and we know Oregon's weather doesn't give you the same window two years in a row.

What We Do in Your Vineyard

• Leaf pulling — Opening the fruit zone for air movement and sun exposure. Critical for disease management in Oregon's cool, wet springs. Too little and you've got mildew pressure. Too much and you've sunburned your clusters. Our crews know the difference.
• Shoot thinning — Early-season removal of excess shoots before they crowd out the ones you want. Act in May and you're shaping the canopy; wait until July and you're doing damage control.
• Shoot tucking — Getting the growing shoots up into the VSP trellis wires. Keeps the canopy organized, improves spray penetration, and makes everything downstream easier.
• Hedging & topping — Controlling canopy growth to maintain vine balance. We coordinate timing with your spray program so we're not working against each other.
• Suckering — Removing non-productive suckers from the trunk and cordons. Tedious work, but it matters for long-term vine structure and health.
• Canopy positioning — Full canopy organization in VSP systems to maximize light distribution across the fruit zone through the season.

Timing Is Everything in the Willamette Valley

Oregon's growing season is short and the weather's unpredictable. A wet June followed by a hot July is exactly the combination that punishes vineyards with poor canopy management — botrytis moves fast when humidity is high and air circulation is poor.

We work with vineyard managers to build a seasonal schedule: shoot thinning in late May, leaf pulling starting in late June, a second pass if the season runs dense. We're not a one-visit crew — we're built for full-season relationships with vineyards that need consistent management through harvest.

Seasonal Calendar

• Late April–May: Suckering, early shoot selection
• May–June: Shoot thinning — the critical window, don't wait
• June–July: Shoot tucking, first leaf pull in the fruit zone
• July–August: Second leaf pull if needed, hedging passes, canopy maintenance
• August–September: Final canopy work before harvest, harvest crew coordination
